The
Stranger, the magnificent 80lb fawn, won an Irish Leger and Laurels.
The Stranger was by Dark Mercury, the McAlinden Gold Cup winner, who had sired the 1979
Irish Derby winner Penny County. Mercury was out of An Tain, who also threw the
1976 Irish Derby winner Tain Mor.
The Stranger was from a litter that included decent open racer Knockrour Rocket and Deep
Inside. She is the dam of Saucy John and Into Oil (who threw Dundalk 500 record breaker
Peace Officer) and grand dam of Oughter Brigg. Lovely Blend also threw Milwaukee Prince
(by Nameless Star), and Special Merchant (by Liberty Lad).
Blend was a grand daughter of the great Clomoney Grand, whose offspring included Kilbelin
Style, Clomoney Jet, Clomoney Flash and Quiet Spring.
The Stranger was someting of an enigma
at stud and declined from favour with Irish breeders despite throwing a number of very
good early-paced dogs, including Tapwatcher and Strange Dilly. |
